About National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs)

Every NVQ consists of a number of units, such as cutting, blow-drying, and so on. You will need to gain theoretical knowledge as well as the practical skills for each unit. You will be assessed (tested) through a variety of methods – such as practical observations of assessments, written tests and questioning. The majority will take place at the training school, although some may also be carried out at your placement salon.

Functional skills

Functional Skills are those core elements of English and Mathematics that provide individuals with the skills and abilities they need to operate confidently, effectively and independently in life, their communities and work. Individuals possessing these skills are able to progress in education, training and employment. Functional Skills in mathematics are assessed by one single test paper at Levels 1 or 2. Functional Skills in English are assessed in three units:

  1. * Speaking,
  2. * Listening & Communicating;
